First Impressions

At A Glance

Finnick Odair was the victor of the 65th Annual Hunger Games. That means two things: that he's dangerous, and that he's a celebrity. People sometimes get so caught up in the second part they forget about the first. He's spent his whole adult life in the public eye, so he's savvy about appearances. He's also very familiar with the downsides of fame. His public playboy lifestyle is just a front for something much darker.

Appearance

Beautiful, and knows it. He's famous and popular for his appearance. His most obvious feature is his clear sea-green eyes. Tall, athletic, with golden-toned skin and a strong but not musclebound build. His hair is bronze, somewhere between light auburn and reddish-blond depending on how sunbleached it is. It's often artfully tousled.

Fashion

Depending on the situation, anything from haute couture to fisherman chic. He often wears makeup, generally eyeliner and light eyeshadow, but sometimes much more extravagant. His natural style is a dressy or high-fashion twist on district fashion, and features light baggy shirts, pants that are either light or fitted, waistcoats, scarves, bulky sweaters, and leather boots. But when he wants to dress up, he has a personal stylist and he's not afraid to use her.

Demeanor & Attitude

Finnick knows how beautiful he is, and it shows. His demeanour is cocky, brash, arrogant, and often flirtatious. He moves with an easy grace and sensuality, with all the familiarity of someone who knows how to use his body. Much of this is a front; when he's not playing for the public, he's more easygoing and friendlier, though he still flirts as easily as he breathes. To watch him go from private to public can be like watching him flick a switch inside himself and turn on self-assurance, charisma, and presence.

Voice

Generic American, which he's carefully modulated from a heavier district accent to be more socially acceptable in the Capitol. When he has his public front on, his voice is described as a seductive purr. In private, he dials down the more likely to be gregarious and good-humored though still often wry and bitingly sarcastic.

Mental & Telepathy

The inside of his mind is an absolute mess. Finnick suffers from chronic depression and is the survivor of a series of traumas that have left him dangerously mentally ill, including surviving the Hunger Games, feeling responsible for the deaths of his family, losing many tributes he'd mentored, and recurrent sexual abuse since he was a teenager. As a subject of a totalitarian state who rebels by collecting information, he's likely to view telepathy as a violation of the one thing he has that remains his own: his mind.

Character Reference/History:
Finnick Odair was born to a fishing family in a coastal fishery in District Four of Panem. Every district in Panem has its own specific industry, and Four’s is fishing. As the child of fisherfolk in a world with little social mobility, Finnick could expect to grow up to be a fisherman himself. In Four, children are introduced to their district's industry from an early age, so he spent a lot of time on and around boats, learning fishing, sailing, and swimming. He’s also implied to have been spearfishing from a very early age.

There’s one guaranteed way for a district child to get rich and famous: to win the Hunger Games. The Games are an annual televised event that serves as a punishment to the districts for rebelling against the Capitol in the civil war known as the Dark Days. Every year, one male and one female child from each district are chosen in a televised Reaping ceremony to be sent to the Capitol as tribute. They receive brief training, participate in media spectacles, and are then sent into the arena to fight to the death for the Capitol’s entertainment and the districts’ punishment. The victor wins fame, glory, a mansion in their district’s Victors’ Village, and enough money to be set for life, along with extra supplies of food for their district for a year.

Tributes are not supposed to receive any training ahead of their Reaping. But Four is one of three districts that regularly break this rule. Colloquially known as Careers, most tributes from Four (and One and Two) attend a special training academy until the age of around eighteen, when they volunteer to take the place of the child chosen in the Reaping. Finnick joined the Careers as a child, but he didn’t wait his turn or finish his training. He volunteered for the 65th Hunger Games at just fourteen.

As a fourteen year old, the other tributes underestimated the threat he posed. It’s likely he deliberately downplayed his fighting skills to help his opponents underestimate him. In the initial bloodbath for supplies, he grabbed spears and knives, and proved to be a skilled fighter with them.

But Finnick had another advantage that no other tribute did that year: the Capitol audience fell in love with him. Popularity with the audience gets a tribute support in the form of gifts purchased by sponsors. While his opponents got almost no supplies, Finnick had all the food and medicine he needed. A week into the Games, he got an extravagant gift: a trident. He wove himself a net that he used to entangle his opponents so he could spear them, and a few days later, he was the victor.

The Capitol immediately began lusting after him. He had a year or two’s respite, but he soon learned the cost of being beautiful and beloved. It was worse than just being harassed by fans. Every year, Finnick returned to the Capitol for the Games, now acting as a mentor for District Four’s tributes. Mentoring was bad enough, but Panem’s President had something worse in store, and delivered Finnick an ultimatum: allow himself to be sold and gifted to the Capitol’s elite for sex, or see the people he cared about killed. He must have shown some early resistance, because his family were killed, leaving his mentor Mags as the closest to a parent he had.

Finnick became an embodiment of the glamour and fame that victory brought, and soon had a reputation as a dissolute playboy, known for the frequency and inconstancy of his affections. He fell into an unhappy routine, with strong implications in canon that his mental health suffered badly for his situation.

Finnick found one source of comfort: the victor of the 70th Hunger Games. Annie Cresta suffered a mental break in the arena when the other tribute from Four was killed in front of her, leaving her situation apparently hopeless. She won after the arena flooded and she was able to out-swim her fellow tributes. Annie was only a year younger than Finnick, and they became close friends and eventually devoted lovers. Of course, loving a woman popularly known as mad had no place in Finnick’s glamorous image, so their relationship remained a deadly secret.

Finnick had other secrets, too. Some of his patrons, guilty for using him, offered him extravagant gifts to soothe their consciences. He learned that he could corner a more valuable market: the secrets of Capitol society. Over time, he developed an extensive collection of information that could destroy countless reputations in the Capitol, including that of President Snow himself.

Unknown to most of Panem, there were stirrings of revolution that would start to erupt after the 74th Games. Finnick had the opportunity to study Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark closely, because while they were in the arena, he was mentoring Four’s female tribute, who was allied with Peeta and eventually killed by Katniss. When Katniss and Peeta defied the rules and forced the Gamemakers to crown them joint victors, it fanned the smouldering fires of revolution.

There was a well-resourced and well-connected cell of revolutionaries operating in both the Capitol and the districts, and they had recruited several victors to their cause, including Finnick and Mags. In the winter following Katniss and Peeta’s victory, revolts broke out in several districts, including Four. The revolts were put down brutally and vital industries were temporarily shut down.

The unrest was not helped by the announcement of the Quarter Quell. Every 25th Hunger Games was of special significance, with a major change to the rules. The 75th Hunger Games would break with all previous rules and feature victors as tributes. This meant that Katniss, as the only female victor from Twelve, would go back into the arena, a convenient opportunity to have her killed. Instead, the revolutionaries came up with a plan. They would rescue Katniss from the arena and take her to the long-hidden District Thirteen to be the face of the revolution.

When the Reaping came for the Quarter Quell, Annie’s name was chosen. Mags quickly volunteered to protect her, though she was now 80 and had very little chance of survival. Finnick was Reaped to be the male tribute. Behind the scenes, the victors were furious. They worked in little ways to fan discontent in the audience. Finnick used his beauty and popularity to devastating effect, reciting love poetry in his final interview that made his fans swoon, and reminded everybody of just how much they supposedly loved him.

To survive in the arena long enough to be rescued, Katniss and Peeta would need protectors. Finnick, still one of the youngest and most capable of the victors, was an obvious choice. He introduced himself to Katniss and tried to train with her in hopes of winning her over and getting her to ally with him, but she proved impervious to his charm. In the end, he wound up having to wear a bracelet given to him by Katniss’ mentor as a visual sign that she should ally with him.

In the arena, Finnick quickly sought out Katniss. After an uneasy standoff, she agreed to the alliance, and he killed another tribute who’d been running towards her. Finnick, Katniss, Mags, and Peeta headed for the cover of the arena’s jungle. But it was obvious Katniss didn’t trust Finnick, and she considered killing him on several occasions. As they explored the jungle, Peeta ran into a force-field that shocked him, stopping his heart. Finnick, familiar with the first aid for drowning victims, was able to revive him using CPR, and Katniss found herself realizing she owed him Peeta’s life and couldn’t kill him.

That night, they faced the next real danger of the arena. Finnick was awoken by Katniss’ screams as a dangerous chemical fog swept towards them. They ran for their lives. But they couldn’t run fast enough to avoid injury, and Peeta and Mags both needed to be carried. Eventually, Katniss could no longer carry Mags and Finnick faced a devastating choice: give up on Peeta and therefore the revolution, or lose Mags. She decided for him, sacrificing herself so the others could escape.

They managed it, but Finnick was heartbroken at the loss of Mags and badly burned by the fog. Water proved to help the chemical damage, but he’d lost one of the only people he could consider family.

Eventually, they were joined by further revolutionary allies, including the tributes from District Three, who were tasked with sabotaging the arena to allow the rebels to rescue them. Their new allies helped Katniss to realise a pattern in the booby-traps in the arena, which operated on a timer. A run-in with the Career tributes saw the death of the woman from Three, but also of two of the Careers. Unfortunately, the allies had become disoriented and Finnick and Katniss walked into the jungle at the wrong time, to discover a psychological torture awaited them: birds that screamed with the voices of their loved ones, including Annie. Shattered by the thought of Annie being tortured, Finnick forgot secrecy and screamed for her, accidentally revealing their relationship not only to Katniss but also to the entire watching nation. Shaken by the experience, Finnick couldn’t sleep well, and offered to take the watch at midnight.

This is the point from which he will come to Fernweh.

Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta have been long-term lovers back in their world, but thanks to the despotism of the president of Panem, their relationship was forbidden. Those of you who are canon-familiar will probably remember their wedding as one of the few happy moments in Mockingjay, and this weekend, that happiness is coming to Ten Forward! Yay!

IC, the wedding will take place on the afternoon and evening of February 6. OOC, events will be posted over this weekend. You're welcome to backtag, of course!

The Ceremony

The wedding ceremony will be held on February 6, on a beach on the coast of Pacifica's Western Sea. There will be beautiful, tranquil waters, white sand, and a canopy handwoven by the bride and groom in an ancient tradition of District Four. The officiant will be an NPC, an ordained JOP from Pacifica. The wedding will be legal in-universe, but of course Finnick and Annie are including as many touches of the traditional District Four wedding ceremony as they can!

This part of proceedings is open to all, but Finnick and Annie have personally invited their canonmates and close CR.

Part of the traditional wedding ceremony in District Four is the singing of an ancient song about how marriage is like a sea voyage. OOC, we're throwing this open to anyone whose character sings and would like to take part in the ceremony. Booker DeWitt will be playing guitar. The singing won't be threaded out as canon never gives us the words. BUT if your character would want to be in on this, and would be happy to be taught the song, practice with the group, and sing at the ceremony, they will get an invite to the reception to say thanks! (We're gonna handwave this process, so no threading required to sign up!)

The Reception

The reception will be held at sunset, again on the beach on Pacifica. This is going to be closed post, as the reception will be specifically for Finnick and Annie's invited guests and the singers who pitched in for the ceremony.

The Party

But never fear! Everyone else can party with the bride and groom afterwards! After dinner, Finnick and Annie will be returning to the Enterprise for a night of festivities in the lounge! Ten Forward Lounge will be host to a party that is open to everyone on the ship! There will be snacks, drinks, and lots and lots of music.

And dancing! If you're lucky, you might even pry the bride and groom away from each other long enough to steal a dance with one of them! Dancing will be largely Earth folk dance style, and much of the music will be Earth-type folk music, but Finnick and Annie have included some contemporary music of their liking, as well.

The Honeymoon

After the party, Finnick and Annie will spend their first night in their now-officially-shared quarters, and will honeymoon on Pacifica. Look out for them there, there will most likely be a post with a chance to hang out with them on the beach!

(Just watch out. Finnick splashes.)

What Now?

If you'd like to sign your character up to sing, and haven't already done so, comment here! This brings no OOC obligations to you, and gets you a ticket to the reception :). Also let us know if your character should be on the invite list and isn't (this is mostly characters who volunteered to help out with wedding things that had to be handwaved due to availability).

Look out for the posts that will go up on the weekend! The ceremony and party will be OTA, and the reception is for ICly invited guests.
